Report: Cubs May Be Closing In On Jorge Soler

If the Chicago Cubs are able to sign the young 19 year old Cuban to a long term deal, they may be able to have a pretty special team in 3-5 years. With budding stars at shortstop (Starlin Castro), second base (Ronald Torreyes), future third baseman but current shortstop (Javier Baez), first base (Anthony Rizzo), and outfield (Brett Jackson, Matt Szczur), the Cubs have plenty to be excited about. If they do sign Soler, they will have another solid piece to look forward to.

CBS Chicago

(WSCR) According to a report, the Cubs may be on the verge of signing 19-year-old old Cuban prospect Jorge Soler for $27 million.

The report indicates Soler is often compared to his countryman Yoenis Cespedes, who signed with the A’s this offseason. The difference, however, is age. Cespedes is 26, while Soler is only 19 and could be developed in the Cubs’ organization.

Here’s a description of Soler from Baseball America’s Jim Callis: :Six-foot-3 and 205 pounds, Soler has explosive bat speed and power potential. He also has plus speed and arm strength and profiles as a classic right fielder, though he runs well enough to play center. Because of his youth, he’ll need some time to develop, but he should be worth the wait.”

  1. So Epstein has started the Cubs’ rebuilding process ? I wish him the best !

    • He wishes to refer to it as the “building” process, as it is a continuous goal, but let’s get real. It’s a rebuilding year with higher than usual possibilities with how far they can go versus, say, the Astros or Orioles. They have the talent, it’s just up to how quick and strong they can develop. Thanks for commenting again Alan!

  2. I’m looking at the division and I can only see the Cards’ and Brewers as being really competitive (that’s if Braun is off the sauce) . I think it’s going to be a “two horse race” between the ” two” ! Mind you I don’t know what to make if the Reds .
