2013 NFL Draft 2nd Round Mock (Based off actual 1st Round)

2nd Round Mock (Based off the 1st round selections)

33. Jacksonville Jaguars- Matt Barkley, QB, USC– From what I’ve seen it’s not a consensus that the Jaguars love Geno Smith, but who knows it could be another smoke screen.

34. San Francisco 49ers- Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford– Ertz is a Harbaugh guy from back at Stanford, and although they could go  defensive line, I’ve heard that they really like Ertz.

35. Philadelphia Eagles- Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia– If someone doesn’t trade up to get him, this is where he should go, a great fit and would be able to sit a year. If the Eagles get Smith it would be an outstanding
draft for them.

36. Detroit Lions- Menelik Watson, OT, Florida State– The Lions weren’t able to address their offensive line yesterday, so I can see them doing it today.

37. Cincinnati Bengals- Eddie Lacy, RB, Alabama– The Bengals need a running back badly, if Lacy falls I see them snatching him up.

38. Arizona Cardinals- Cornellius “Tank” Carradine– They want a pass rusher, and he’s the best available.

39. New York Jets- Ryan Nassib, QB, Syracuse– According to profootballtalk, the Jets were eyeing Ryan Nassib in the 2nd round, they obviously need an upgrade at the position.

40. Tennessee Titans- Jesse Williams, DT, Alabama– A great defensive lineman available, they could go cornerback, but Williams to me is the best player available.

41. Buffalo Bills- Robert Woods, WR, USC– The Bills need a receiver, and although Woods may not be the tallest or the fastest, he is a great route-runner and has great hands, which would compliment Stevie Johnson.

42. Oakland Raiders- Kawann Short, DT, Purdue– The Raiders need a defensive tackle, and they cannot ignore it anymore. If one of the top four defensive tackles fall to them, they have to take one.

43. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Margus Hunt, DE/DT, SMU– He reminds me of Michael Bennett, a guy they just lost in free agency.

44. Carolina Panthers- Larry Warford, G, Kentucky– I can see the Panthers trying to upgrade their trenches this year. They could use a receiver, but they need to protect Cam and help those two backs out.

45. San Diego Chargers- Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee– Philip Rivers needs a go to guy. It can’t be Antonio Gates forever, and Hunter is the best receiver available.

46. Buffalo Bills- Manti Te’o, ILB, Notre Dame– The Bills need to improve their defense. They could use a solid player, and it could be Te’o.

47. Dallas Cowboys- John Hankins, DT, Ohio State– I don’t know why the Cowboys traded out when they could have gotten Sylvester Williams, or Shariff Floyd for that matter, maybe they wanted a gap filler in Hankins.

48. Pittsburgh Steelers- Quinton Patton, WR, Louisiana Tech– The Steelers lost Mike Wallace, and almost lost Emmanuel Sanders so they are going to need receivers in the near future.

49. New York Giants- Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State– The Giants need to upgrade their secondary badly, and Taylor would be an absolute steal here.

50. Chicago Bears- Arthur Brown, ILB/OLB, Kansas State– The Bears need this guy. Maybe he’s not the replacement for Urlacher, but he’s a very solid player with potential to be very good.

51. Washington Redskins- Robert Alford, CB, Southeastern Louisiana– The Redskins need a corner in the worst way. I see them taking whoever’s the highest corner on their board here, I think it’s Alford at this spot.

52. New England Patriots- Darius Slay, CB, Mississippi State– Here is where I predict there is going to be a mini run on corners like there seems to be every year. Patriots need a corner badly, but I don’t blame them for taking the Vikings trade, way too good to pass up.

53. Cincinnati Bengals- Jonathan Cyprien, S, FIU– The Bengals need a safety. He’s the best one available, I don’t think Cyprien makes it past this pick.

54. Miami Dolphins- Terron Armstead, OT, Arkansas-Pinebluff- If they don’t make the trade for Brandon Albert I have heard that they like this guy a lot.

55. Green Bay Packers- Brian Schwenke, C, Cal– If Lacy or Cyprien doesn’t fall to them I can see them taking an interior lineman. He reminds me of Scott Wells and plays with an attitude.

56. Seattle Seahawks- Da’rick Rodgers, WR, Tennessee Tech– I have heard that the Seahawks are looking for another receiver, and John Schneider likes to make bold moves.

57. Houston Texans- Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU– They need someone alongside Brian Cushing to help out that defense, and Minter is the best ILB available.

58. Denver Broncos- Blidi Wreh-Wilson, CB, Connecticut– The Broncos need a corner and he’s been slowly moving back up draft charts.

59. New England Patriots- Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon State– The Patriots want another receiver, Wheaton is a little small but very explosive and likes to stretch the field, who could also take over Brandon Lloyd’s role.

60. Atlanta Falcons- John Jenkins, DT/NT, Georgia– I see the Falcons taking the best defensive lineman, and to me that’s John Jenkins.

61. San Francisco 49ers- Damontre Moore, DE/OLB, Texas A&M– I can see the 49ers taking someone to have backing up Aldon Smith, he’s still available and has a lot of potential.

62. Baltimore Ravens- Jon Bostic, ILB, Florida– Ravens need an inside linebacker, and although they might have to reach a little bit, I think this guy could be very good.

2013 NFL Mock Draft

2013 NFL MOCK DRAFT ROUND 1

  1. Chiefs- Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M– This guy is about as solid of a pick as you can find. We all know that there is no Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin in the draft, but when it comes to offensive and defensive line it is stacked and deep. Joeckel is a smart player, who can both run and pass block extremely well, and is very good at getting to the second level when run blocking. He won the Outland Trophy for best offensive lineman too. At first it was almost hard to watch tape on him because he doesn’t look physically dominant, but he knows how to get the job done. Same thing at the combine, but as it turns out he doesn’t need to be since he’s very sound in his technique, and rarely ever lets anyone through.
  2. Jaguars- Ezekiel Ansah, DE, BYU– Ansah is quite new to the game of football, but has already made a name for himself. He is a pure 4-3 end rusher, who can also play the run. This is a guy where you can’t just look at his stats; you have to watch the tape (especially at the end of the year). Believe me, he will blow your mind. He only had 4.5 sacks in 2012, but had a great end to his season with his great bowl game, and really wowed some people at the senior bowl practices and game. He has been compared to Jason Pierre-Paul by many, but what I find is that he is already ahead of where Pierre-Paul was at this stage of his career and has nowhere to go but up.
  3. Raiders- Shariff Floyd, DT, Florida– Floyd is a freak athlete as well. He is an animal for being over 300 pounds. One thing that makes him appealing is that he is a good prospect for 4-3 DT, and 3-4 defensive end, great speed and strength, with a non-stop motor. When I watch tape on him his performance tends to fall against better competition. He has a long way to go before he becomes a dominant presence, but if you can coach him up well, he is definitely worth a top 5 pick.
  4. Eagles-Eric Fisher, OT, Central Michigan– This is a tricky pick, because the Eagles need so many people on defense, but this guys has been considered 1a at tackle, not 2, because he’s right up there with Joeckel. As of right now, the talent on the defensive side of the ball just isn’t there at the #4 pick, therefore I see them going with a sure thing with Eric Fisher, to protect Mike Vick, and potentially new starter after him Nick Foles. Fisher has been potentially overlooked because he went to a small school, but when he made it to the senior bowl, he didn’t disappoint one bit.He dominated the competition and showed off his outstanding athleticism and footwork. He also showed that he’s not afraid to play with a little nastiness and get in your face once in a while. If he falls here, the Eagles should snatch him up.
  5. Lions- Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama– This guy is an athletic and lanky corner. He has the speed to keep up with elite talent, and lanky arms to hit the ball away. I do have some concerns about him though. First, he lacks a ball-hawk mentality; he seems as though he lacks the killer-instinct to make a play on the ball and is very adequate with knocking it down. Although, he doesn’t play as physical as he should with his size. Many times there were jump balls in his college career where he and the receiver would go up for it and the receiver would come away with it, because he wanted it more. Milliner to me seems like another potential pick, where he could be an outstanding corner, but he needs a lot of coaching to become an elite talent.
  6. Browns- Dion Jordan, DE/OLB, Oregon– This is another guy who is an absolute athlete. He is 6’7”, 243 lbs., with a frame to put on another 20 pounds easily. As much as I hate to say this, he is ANOTHER potential pick, he lacks an overall identity. Many people think he is a better suit for 3-4 OLB, but many teams that are looking at him would line him up as a 4-3 end (which I think is a bad idea). He is a very versatile and smart player who can do it all, except lacks major pass rushing skills. He has been lined up at almost every position on the defensive side of the ball, even cornerback, but the fact is he’s going to play end or linebacker, and if you can’t get to the quarterback, you’re going to have problems. I look at him and see Aldon Smith, but where he’s going he doesn’t have Justin Smith to take double teams for him.
  7. Cardinals- Lane Johnson, OT, Oklahoma– This guy has been shooting up draft boards, because of his athleticism, and football knowledge. He ran the 2nd fastest forty time for an offensive lineman ever, and he used to play quarterback. Lane Johnson has played LE, RE, Quarterback, TE,plus both right tackle and left tackle. He has been all over the field, he can think like a defensive lineman but play as an offensive tackle. This guy would be a great addition to the Cardinals who have had major offensive line troubles lately, and they need to protect Carson Palmer or Drew Stanton back there.
  8. Bills- Jonathon Cooper, G/C, UNC– Cooper is a freak athlete for a guard. He showed very well at the combine, and outperformed Chance Warmack who was believed to be one of the top players in the draft at the time. The Bills just lost a top interior lineman Andy Levitre to free agency, and Cooper could help fill that void right away. Usually guards tend to fall, but he has shown that he is a good football player, with good feet, good hands and the ability to both run and pass block.
  9. Jets-Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB, LSU– Mingo is a freak athlete. He is very fast, but lacks strength. Fortunately that is something he can work on. Mingo has a ton of upside, he has great anticipation, can drop back if need be, but his bread and butter will be rushing the passer using his speed to his advantage. He may not have a great arsenal, but his athleticism is off the charts. I have a feeling that this guy can end up being a very good player in Rex Ryan’s defense because he is not only limited to rushing the passer, but could potentially cover running backs or tight ends out in the flat. He needs some work, but in a couple years he could a phenom.
  10. Titans- Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State– Werner is a 4-3 end, who can rush the passer, and also play the run very well. He has a great jump off the snap, without having too many offside calls. His only problem is that he lacks consistency. Some games he makes you say wow, and others you barely notice he even showed up. With good coaching and consistency he would definitely be worth a top 10 pick. The Titans need a pass rusher badly to help alleviate some pressure off of their already struggling defensive backfield.
  11. Chargers- Kenny Vacarro, S, Texas– They desperately need an offensive tackle, but if the top 3 tackles are gone by the time they pick, they may have to go to another area of need. Kenny Vacarro is the best safety on the board, but isn’t physically going light anyone up. During his career in Texas he covered a lot of tight ends quite well, and in his senior season, covered many slot receivers. Safety is a need for many teams, and the Chargers may be reaching for a position of need, but it couldn’t hurt to snag a solid player.
  12. Dolphins- Xavier Rhodes, CB/S, Florida State– The Dolphins desperately need help in their secondary, they let go of Sean Smith in free agency and traded away Vontae Davis last year. This is a tough one, Desmond Trufant is also a very talented corner, but Rhodes has the ability to play both corner and safety, and had an outstanding combine. Rhodes could help the Dolphins right away, and could potentially be their #1 corner by day one.
  13. Buccaneers- Star Lotulelei, DT/NT, Utah– The Buccaneers have struck out with some of their defensive line picks in the past, due to major injury problems. Star Lotulelei is a great player but who has dropped because he was not cleared by doctors at the NFL combine due to heart problems. He has now been cleared, but many people are a little leery of taking him very early. The Buccaneers have shown that they don’t mind if a player is injury prone. Lotulelei is quite versatile, he can play 3-4 end, 3-4 nose tackle, and 4-3 tackle. He played at Utah and still succeeded while taking many double teams.
  14. Panthers- Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri-The Panthers could go many ways with this pick, they need a corner, safety, more defensive lineman, and another wide receiver. Sheldon Richardson would be a great pick here, because he is fast, physical, has the ability to pass rush, has a great jump off the snap, and fits their scheme perfectly.  He may also be able to play 3-4 end if they decide to change their scheme.
  15. Saints- Jarvis Jones, DE/OLB, Georgia-The Saints could use almost every position on defense besides linebacker. Jones used to be touted as the best player in the draft, but he has spinal stenosis and had a DISASTROUS pro day where he ran a 4.9 forty time. I see the Saints taking him because when you see his tape, he stands out and makes plays. He has monumental potential, but many people are leery of taking a guy with spinal stenosis with their first round pick due to his risk of injury. For some odd reason I don’t see the Saints being scared off by this, and they welcome his talent. Jones could be the steal of the draft, could be the next Da’quan Bowers.
  16. Rams- Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia– This year the Rams lost Sam Bradford’s favorite target in Danny Amendola. Here is a guy who has the same style of play, without the big contract. Austin is a whopping 5’9” 173 pounds, but has astounding speed and agility. He ran a low 4.3 forty time at the combine and wowed everyone with his ability to play the game of football which proves that he’s not just a track star. One thing that makes Tavon so special is that he has no fear of going over the middle, which is a lot of what Amendola did. My only fear is that his frame will be too small, and risks being injury prone. I hope that is not the case, but it is a harsh reality. Another thing that makes Tavon so special is that he doesn’t only have the ability to make a play on the ball over the middle; he can make mind boggling plays after the catch. If Tavon falls here, I don’t see the Rams needing 15 minutes to make this pick.
  17. Steelers- Cordarelle Patterson, WR, Tennessee– With the departure of Mike Wallace and potentially Emmanuel Sanders they are going to need another wide receiver. Not to undermine Antonio Brown, but he is clearly a slot guy. Patterson is a physical freak, 6’3” 205 pounds, with outstanding speed and quickness. Patterson only has one year of Division I college football after being recruited out of a community college. He needs a ton of work (he doesn’t have great hands, route running ability, physicality as a receiver) but when he has the ball in his hands he can score. It may take a few years, but this guy could be the next Mike Wallace, but he could also be Mike Williams.
  18. Cowboys- Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama– Chance Warmack used to be seen as one of the top players in the draft, but got embarrassed at the combine when Cooper performed extremely well, and Warmack slipped up. He looked out of shape and a little hesitant on some of the drills. But the Cowboys would love to make a move for an interior lineman because of their new contract to Romo. If you pay that type of money to a quarterback, you might want to protect him. Warmack is still a top prospect, but the combine measures how in shape you are, and how you prepared for that day, it raises some questions (to me at least) how bad he wants to be a dominant player in the NFL.
  19. Giants- Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia– The Giants are in desperate need of a linebacker, and Ogletree fits their scheme to a T. Ogletree is known for his athleticism and lankiness to help defend the pass game. The Giants are eager to rush only 4 or 5 guys and leave the rest back in coverage. Ogletree’s downside is that he is very passive on run defense; he waits until the back is about five yards down field and will never take him head on, even if he does have the size advantage. But luckily for him, the Giants will primarily use him in coverage. Ogletree did get a DUI before the NFL Combine, so he may have some maturing to do.
  20. Bears- Arthur Brown, ILB/OLB, Kansas State– The Bears have recently lost Brian Urlacher, and could use another solid presence in their line-up. Brown excels in stopping the run; he is good at reading the play and shooting through the gap to make the tackle. He is serviceable in his pass coverage, but definitely needs to improve. He sometimes looks lost while in open space, but it’s something he can work on. He was a little undersized and didn’t have the frame to be an NFL linebacker, but when he made it to the combine he added about 15 pounds, which is a good sign. He is also a versatile player; he can play inside and outside linebacker in a 4-3 defense. He is a bit raw as of right now, but within a couple of years could be a very good player. Some have compared him to Ray Lewis, but I wouldn’t go that far.
  21. Bengals- Keenan Allen, WR, California– The Bengals are in dire need of a #2 option for their receivers. A.J Green has carried the load for the past two years, and can’t do it all himself. Keenan Allen is a tall, physical receiver who is a great blocker and is excellent at going up for jump balls. The knock on Keenan Allen is that he is slow, and also tore his PCL, so he couldn’t workout at the combine or on his pro day. He fits the Bengals scheme, although they could use players on the defensive side of the ball. I think that he might be too good for them to pass up at this spot.
  22. Rams- Jonathan Cyprien, S, FIU– The Rams need to upgrade their safety position, and bad. They cannot have Dahl back there for a full year again. Cyprien looked outstanding in the senior bowl and really impressed a lot of people. He has the aggressiveness that you like to see out of a safety, but also the ability to cover pretty well. He is a great tackler who is aggressive in the run game, but in coverage he drew flags a few times for hitting players in the head. He is a good prospect, who may be over drafted because of his position, but also overlooked by many because he went to a small school.
  23. Vikings- Desmond Trufant, CB, Washington– With the Vikings losing Winfield they are desperate for help at corner. They thought they had some help when they drafted Chris Cook high in the 2nd round a few years ago, as well as Josh Robinson in the 3rd round last year, but neither has been quite what they were hoping for. Desmond Trufant has outstanding speed, and pretty fluid hips allow him to turn around quickly and cover the deep routes. Also, he is a good tackler for a cornerback. A slight knock on him is that gets way too handsy sometimes and has some incredibly obvious pass interference calls. If he can polish his game he could be an absolute steal for the Vikings.
  24. Colts-Kawann Short, DT, Purdue– Although the Colts signed Ricky Jean-Francois to a deal this free-agency, they still need help along the line. Kawann Short, in my opinion, could be one of the more underrated players in the draft. He doesn’t wow you with speed, but he is a big fella who can make plays. He is very good against the run, but can also rush the passer up the middle. One thing I found encouraging was that he was able to get by some double teams as well. In last year’s draft the Colts went almost all offense, this year I see them going with a few defensive players with their top picks, he’s just an all-around good football player and a guy who could help them out right away.
  25. Vikings- John Hankins, DT/NT, Ohio State– The Vikings could use another receiver to compliment Greg Jennings, but they are going to need a solid player in the middle of their line too, and with it being such a receiver heavy draft, I see them waiting till the 2nd round to pick up a receiver. Hankins is a huge guy who can take up space, and is a great run stopper. I have him going to the Vikings because I see them wanting a big guy who is great against the run like Pat Williams and a guy who will make it hard to open up any holes for the running back to shoot through. Unfortunately he lacks almost any pass rushing ability, but he is very good at what he does, and should stick to his bread and butter. He may have to come out on 3rd downs, but will be a valuable asset to a team who wants him for what he’s good at.
  26. Packers- Margus Hunt, DE/DT, SMU– The Packers have been lacking a pass rush for the past couple years now and have missed Cullen Jenkins….Badly. Hunt is a physical freak, he is 6’8” 277 pounds, ran a 4.62 forty, and repped 225 pounds 38 times. He is raw, because he used to be a world class shot putter, but he has turned his attention to football. He excels on the edge as a speed rusher using a straight up bull rush. He needs to improve his arsenal. If he gets a good swim or rip move he could be dangerous. I see the Packers putting him at 3-4 end, and having him to add 20 pounds to his frame. He got monumentally better during the 2nd half of his senior season at SMU, where he took a lot of double teams, and still could get to the passer. A knock on him is that he is already 25, but some may view it as a good thing. One thing we cannot overlook is that although he may be more mature than other players, he still has a learning curve to go through and might not be the pass rusher he is expected to be his first year. Should be a great fit for what the Packers want to do, and the Packers have reportedly talked to him 5 times already.
  27. Texans- Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia– This may be a shocking pick, but it makes a lot of sense. Matt Schaub was terrible last year. There is no getting around it. He was benched for T.J Yates who is not a bad player in his own right, but shouldn’t be starting anytime soon. Smith has a cannon for an arm and is very mobile when he wants to be. If they can give him the time to develop, and help with consistency and accuracy he could also be a tremendous player. Many people have him high in the first round, but the fact is if he gets by the Bills pick at #8, nobody else needs a quarterback until the 2nd round.  Again this may seem odd, but I don’t find it too far-fetched, Smith may fall quite a ways and could be picked up by a team you don’t expect.
  28. Broncos- Datone Jones, DT, UCLA– The Broncos don’t have too many needs, but one thing they do need is another player to help fill the middle with Derek Wolfe.Jones is a tricky read, he needs to work on his consistency, and his pass rush ability. Sometimes he has an outstanding game, and other times you don’t know that he even suited up. If he can become more consistent in his game and rush the quarterback he could be a great player.
  29. Patriots- Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State– The Patriots could use a solid player in the secondary badly. They lost Patrick Chung to free agency, and don’t have outstanding corners. Jamar Taylor is 5’11” 192 pounds, and ran a 4.37 at the combine. He is a good man cover cornerback that also helps out on the run. The Boise State defense was only passed on for 3 touchdowns this past year, and he was a big reason why. He may be overlooked because of the school he went to, but unfortunately he may also be overrated because of the lack of competition he played against in the Mountain West.
  30. Falcons- Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame– The Falcons are going to need a tight end after the 2013 season. Eifert has great hands and is a good route runner, but really lacks the ability to block. Eifert could be a safety net for Matt Ryan. Eifert needs to work on going over the middle, he was lined up at receiver many times to mismatch the defense, and was outstanding going up for jump balls against smaller quick guys, but never saw him take a big shot and hold on to the ball. Eifert to me looks like a receiver in a tight ends body, which I think would be a good fit for the Falcons who will use him as such.
  31. 49ers- Jesse Williams, DT/NT, Alabama– The 49ers lost Ricky Jean-Francois and Isaac Sopoaga in free-agency this year, and could look to replace him. He is a guy that is versatile along the defensive line, he can play 3-4 end, 3-4 nose tackle, and 4-3 tackle. They may be able to plug him in at nose tackle right away, or have him move along the line and give their ends like Justin Smith and Ray McDonald breaks.
  32. Ravens- Manti Te’o, ILB, Notre Dame-The Ravens lost three linebackers this year to free agency and they need someone to plug in right away. Te’o is a smart player who is very instinctive, and excels at stopping the run, but lacks speed to cover tight ends in the NFL. He ran a slow forty time at the combine even after dropping 15 pounds. He is a tricky read, he was a great football player for Notre Dame, but his skill set may not transfer to the NFL. Also, he may fall because of the controversy with his well-known scandal that most everyone knows about by now. Lastly, but not least, when he played Alabama in the National Championship game he was horrendous, missing tackles constantly, and was simply outmatched. Many teams may shy away from him because of that game alone.
